Festivals, costuming, concerts all come to mind also. Let your imagination rule!

Being a crafty gal and crystal lover, I am always thinking about how I can make crystal related crafts. There seems to be no shortage of ideas on how to incorporate crystals into everyday useful items.

So, If you are like me…

Then you not only love the way crystals look but also enjoy the healing benefits crystals have to offer.

These DIY hair pins are a great way to infuse that magical metaphysical crystal energy goodness into your life!

While there are many ways to craft with crystals such as using resin, polymer clay, wire wrapping and so on, in this post we are going to focus on how to use these darling mini heart shaped crystals in making hair pins.

Here are the supplies:

I’ve posted some amazon links for the supply items to help, however, please note I used my oldie but goodie glue gun that I’ve had for a very long time…

…I feel like most crafters have that old white glue gun from the 80’s or 90’s with melted glue drips still rocking it in their craft drawers.

Selecting Crystal Hearts

I enjoy supporting other small businesses whether it be on Amazon, Etsy, or anywhere else. So I actually purchased my mini crystal heart carvings from KayleeNYC on Etsy! Her crystals are the real deal, lots of options, great shipping and customer service, what more can a crafty gal ask for? I highly recommend her shop 🙂

Now some crystals on Amazon.com are a little questionable, some are real annnd some are fakes. 🤷‍♀️

Even in the link I shared I easily spotted the turquoise as a fake. Also, malachite in this link would be a fake.

There is nothing really wrong with lab created or dyed crystals, they are still very pretty. It is a matter of disclosure so customers are informed buyers.

I opted for a variety pack of crystals, but you could absolutely choose to stick with one type of crystal heart.

Depending on what chakras, color story, event, or what kind of metaphysical healing properties you are going for might help your decision. Going for birthstones might also be a great way to select stones too!

Some quick examples of healing properties of the crystal hearts I have pictured are:

  • Rose Quartz – Universal Love / Romantic Love
  • Kiwi Jasper – Emotional strength, soothing to anxiety and depression
  • Amethyst – Calming, spiritual wisdom, develops intuition
  • Blue Aventurine – Create positive change, balancing
  • Mookaite – Encourages openness and adaptability, Improves overall health
  • Que Sera – Enables a deeper connection with compassion, empathy, and provides emotional healing.

I would stick to the 20mm size crystal hearts for this project. 20mm is .78” so just a bit over 3/4 inch. Going a little bit larger might be something that is still achievable, I just wouldn’t go smaller if we are thinking about the size ratio needed for the 3” hair pin. Certainly a smaller pin could accommodate smaller crystal hearts though.

The Hair Pins

These are 3” U shaped hair pins so they are a very good size for hair buns or some added support to an updo already in place. They are great for showing off the pretty colors and carvings of the crystal hearts.

Not much else to say here other than there are other color and size options available. I’ve even seen some that have the curvy sides to help secure them in place similar to an extra large bobby pin.

Aleene’s Jewelry and Metal Glue

I have used other jewelry glue such as B-7000, and I cannot really speak too much to other glues on the market since I have not tested them.

BUT…

I can say Aleene’s glue is the perfect glue to use with crystal crafting!

The B-7000 glue compared is like a nail glue or super glue, has a very good liquid state and adheres great if you can hold it in place for a good 30 seconds to a minute before setting it down to leave it be.

While the Aleenes’ has a little more of a gel like consistency that will help hold the crystal heart in place without needing your two hands tied up, leaving that precious time for you to keep on crafting!

Tutorial

Let’s begin!

Step 1: To prevent glue on our surfaces lay some newspaper, use a silicone mat, or a cutting mat (silicone works best for non stick cleanup)

I don’t even own one of these mats yet! You bet I will be buying one of these soon though!

I had to use paper. While that is perfectly fine and it did the job, I had to keep moving the hair pins around to keep it from sticking to the paper. 😖

Step 2: Lay out your hair pins and line them up with about an inch space in between each one. Space out more if you like some extra room. 💜💙🖤💚

Step 3: Using the Aleenes’ glue add a small size dab to the middle backside of one of the crystal hearts you have picked out. A little will go a long way but try not to put too little or too much either.

Step 4: Carefully place the crystal with the glue side down on top along the horizontal bar of the hair pin, then gently smoosh it around so some of the glue gets on the pin. Proceed to center it in place.

Step 5: Repeat as many times as you like for the amount of hairpins you want to make.

Let the glue dry before handling (about 1 – 3 hours)

Note: I will be adding more photos for each step as I am able to. (my studio is under construction) Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Step 6: Cut out as many little felt circles about .75” diameter (3/4 inch) as you have hair pins. A template is helpful when cutting out multiples. (You could cut out square, rectangle or triangle shapes instead if you so choose) ✂️⚫️

Alternatively you could use pre cut felt circles which are available for purchase here OR if you use a cutting machine such as a Cricut this will help the process along.

Step 7: Hot glue the felt to the backside of the hair pin to finish and cover any glue or unwanted area.

Steps 6 & 7 are completely optional but give a nice finishing touch.

See that was so easy! 😌

This is pretty fast drying glue but allow these to dry and bond in place for at least 3 hours to cure and up to 48 hours before you place in your hair.

Did you get glue on your fingers?

That’s okay, I have a simple fix for you. Use some nail polish remover – the kind with acetone in it and with a wipe rub some on the area where there is glue until it is dissolved.

Here are a few photos of the finished pins in my hair, please excuse the messy bun 😜
